Both choirs run all year round, and rehearse at the Wesleyan church, 58 Grosvenor Ave. in Old Ottawa South (corner of Sunnyside and Grosvenor).
what makes these choirs unique is the arrangements; all are done by Lee.
Just show up for any rehearsal to check us out. The only ‘audition’ is just to see what your range is, or if you are tone-deaf (rare occurrence). People are welcome to join any time of the year. There’s no need to be able to read music; I teach by ear, but scores are available as well. I also have mp3s available to help members study on their own.
What we do more than anything is have a ball, and we laugh as much as we sing. It’s a very friendly, relaxed, FUN bunch of people who are thrilled to be a part of such a unique vocal ensemble. We perform at several community events during the year. It’s pretty informal, and we laugh a lot, but we get stuff done!
Lee Hayes VOX!
the Wednesday night choir
Formerly known as Folka Voca, this community choir of 60+ voices meets every Wednesday at the Wesleyan church (see above).
The repertoire is contemporary, a lot of pop, folk, and funk faves from the 60s, 70s, 80s…The cost is $180 per six-month membership, and membership fees are due every September and March. Choir runs 12 months of the year. We have a pretty dedicated bunch; most people come almost every week. I ask that members be committed to an absolute minimum of 3 out of every 4 weeks.
If you’re thinking of joining just for a month or two, it’s probably not the choir for you, as we have regular ongoing performances every 6 weeks or so, and all newbies are asked to learn existing repertoire.
Having said that, there are those who take a week or two off once in a while due to work or family obligations, which is understandable and acceptable. But the overall minimum attendance by each member must still be 75%. Ish.
Voca Sol: Thursday afternoon choir
The Thursday Daytime Choir is 30+ people strong. We meet every Thursday from 1:30-3 at the Wesleyan church (see above).
The repertoire is a mix of Folk, Jazz, and contemporary folk/pop, with a few surprises thrown in! The cost is $150 per six-month membership, but because many of our members are seniors, there are subsidies offered to those who request it. Membership fees are due September and March. Voca Sol runs 12 months of the year. It’s pretty casual and relaxed, and we have a social aspect as well.
